So the tropical storm ended up being nothing, which is always a possibility around here. You live in Houston long enough you learn just to prepare and see what happens. Some times you end up with a rain storm for five days flooding everything and others the storms blows apart in five hours.

Work however has been kicking my ass. I've been working eight hour shifts for four days straight and am more exhausted now than when I got back from DefCon. So its only tonight when I don't have to get up in the morning that I feel I can spare any energy to actually talk about the convention.

First off, as this was my first comic/sci-fi con I was fairly happy with the way everything went. There was a pretty good size group of anime fans but with Tokyo in Tulsa also working at the same time there was abit of division of crowds and more than a few hard feelings.

Anyways, as this was my first sci-fi con this was the first con I went to that had a large influx of storm troopers or jedi. Normally at anime cons you'd have one or two lone figures in storm trooper garb or some guy dressed in his bathrobe waving around a light saber.

This convention however, had the 501st and Fandom Force Tulsa present and quite organized. The 501st acted guard to the Dealer Room doors, posed for photos (theres one of me floating around somewhere surrounded by storm troopers pointing guns at me) and played the 'how long have you had those droids?' game. All of this made the weekend more entertaining to be at and to observe. Fandom force Tulsa seemed mainly there to balance out the odds and let people play with expensive light sabers which was awesome.

Guest wise, not too many people impressed me except for James O'Barr of The Crow. I got to get my copy of the Crow signed by him and managed to gibber at him (thats two for two in my role model encounters, I'm fairly convinced its a good thing I missed Yoshitaka Amano a couple years ago, I probably would have left puddles of bodily fluids) He seemed like a nice enough guy and took my mouth flapping silence with good grace and humor. I also chatted with some of the other folks at the artist alley and compared notes on products and such which was cool.

This was also the first con I was placed in a secure area. Which meant I had actual set hours which I had to follow. I opened and closed when the Dealers room did, which was an odd experience for me. On the plus side I actually got to see some of the evening events at the con and find decent places to eat at night instead of scrounging at odd hours of the night. Also I didn't have to pack up everything at night which made my life easier and simpler.

This con seemed to be more to my tastes unsuprisingly. I'm a geek at heart and have not too much in common with most anime crowds. This con I got along with most people and they seemed to like my stuff. Any con where I don't get called morbid or weird to my face is a good con in my opinion. Plus no one commissioned me for porn which saves me the embarassment when someone looks over my shoulder.

In short, I quite enjoyed the con, the 501st made my weekend, James O'Barr is nice and I'd very much like to go again if its at a time of year I could make it.
